Automotive answering service vs AI receptionist for repair shops

We make On Your Clock. Every competitor price below comes from that company's own pricing page.

An automotive answering service answers a repair shop's phone when the team can't. A live service puts a person on the line, billed by the minute or by the call, and usually ends the call with a message for your team. An AI receptionist like On Your Clock books the job into your shop software during the call, answers up to 20 calls at the same time and costs the same at any hour. For 300 minutes of calls a month, the cheapest live plans we checked cost $384 to $479. On Your Clock costs $249.

What is an automotive answering service?

An automotive answering service, or auto answering service, picks up calls for a repair shop, dealership or body shop in the shop's name. It takes the caller's details, answers common questions and passes the job on, so calls don't go to voicemail when the team is busy in the bays or the shop is closed.

There are two kinds:

  • A live answering service: receptionists at a call center answer from a script you give them.
  • An AI receptionist, also called an AI answering service: software answers in a natural voice, using what you've told it about your shop, and books the work.

What happens to a call with each one

With a live answering service

A receptionist at the answering company picks up in your shop's name, follows your script and takes the caller's details. Some can book into an online calendar. You get the message by text or email, and your team calls the customer back to set up the job.

With On Your Clock

The AI agent picks up in your shop's name and asks for the caller's name, number, vehicle and problem. It answers questions from the knowledge base you give it and books the appointment into your shop software during the call. You get a summary and a full transcript of every call, and the job is already on your schedule.

How much does an automotive answering service cost?

Monthly price for the same number of call minutes, from each company's published plans. Taxes and any fees a company doesn't list are not included.

100$249$189$159$235$395

900$549$1,475$1,185$1,650$1,725 for 500 minutes, plus overage

How we worked these out: we used each company's cheapest plan for that many minutes, adding its published per minute overage where the minutes go past the plan. Ruby doesn't publish its overage rate, so we show its nearest plan. On Your Clock adds a one time $199 setup fee if you keep it after the free trial.

Smith.ai charges per call instead of per minute. For 200 calls a month it costs $1,965, or $2,265 if every call is booked. On Your Clock's Starter plan is 300 minutes, about 200 calls, for $249.

AnsweringService.com prices its message and transfer plans per call. Its per call plans cost $340 a month for 200 message only calls, or $535 for 200 calls that can be put through to your team. The table shows its MyAssistant plans, which are priced per minute and add a setup fee from $50.

Is an answering service worth it for a repair shop?

For most shops, yes, because calls you miss are jobs you lose, during the day as well as after hours. Marchex, which analyzes calls for large automotive service operators, found up to 21% of calls to automotive service locations go unanswered or mishandled, and even the best locations miss close to 10%. The typical shop in ARI's 2026 benchmark of 1,780 independent US shops has an average repair order of $612. One job you'd otherwise lose is worth more than two months of our Starter plan.

Answering service vs hiring a receptionist

The median US receptionist earned $38,010 a year in May 2025, or $18.27 an hour, before payroll taxes and benefits, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. One full time person covers about 40 of the 168 hours in a week, so nights, weekends and lunch breaks still go unanswered. On Your Clock costs $2,988 to $13,188 a year and can cover every hour. Many shops keep their service advisor at the desk and let On Your Clock take the overflow and the hours nobody is there.

Why shops choose an AI receptionist

  • Jobs booked, not messages. The agent books into your shop software during the call, so nobody has to call back to set it up.
  • It works with the software you already use. Tekmetric, Shop‑Ware, Shopmonkey, Mitchell 1, AutoLeap, Shop Boss and more. Bookings land where your team already works.
  • No busy signal at the busy times. It can answer up to 20 calls at the same time when your phone line can forward them, so a Monday morning rush doesn't go to voicemail.
  • Lower cost at real shop volume. At 300 minutes a month and above, On Your Clock costs less than every live plan we checked.
  • The same price at any hour. Nights, weekends and the lunch rush all cost the same.
  • A record of every call. A summary and a full transcript, not just a message.

When a live answering service can still make sense

  • Your shop gets very few calls. Under about 130 to 160 minutes a month, PATLive's and Specialty's smallest plans cost less than our $249 Starter plan.
  • Most of your callers speak Spanish. On Your Clock answers in English, with Spanish coming soon.
  • You want callers put through to a person on the spot. Some live plans connect the call to your team.

Will customers talk to an AI?

Customers mostly want a fast answer. In an April 2026 survey of 1,083 consumers by Lorikeet, which sells AI customer support, 44% said they'd choose AI over waiting 15 minutes for a person. In a 2026 Gartner survey, 87% said a company using AI must give them a way to reach a person.

On Your Clock does both. During the conversation it replies in about a second, from our own measurements. When a caller asks for a person, the agent takes their details and the request reaches your team with the call summary, so they can call back. You also decide in your settings whether the agent tells callers it's an AI.

How to choose an automotive answering service

Ask every provider these questions before you sign up:

  1. Where do bookings go? Check it books into the shop software you use, not just a separate calendar.
  2. What happens after hours and on weekends? Check the hours you need are covered, and whether they cost extra.
  3. How are breakdowns and urgent calls handled? Check it can follow your rule for urgent jobs and share your towing partner's details.
  4. How many calls can it answer at once? A Monday morning rush shouldn't go to voicemail.
  5. How are you billed? Compare the price at the minutes your shop actually uses, including overage.
  6. What do you get after each call? A message, or a summary, a transcript and the booking.

Then use the free trial and make these calls yourself:

  1. Call at 10 pm and ask to book a brake inspection. Check where the booking ends up and how long it takes your team to see it.
  2. If your phone line forwards more than one call at once, call from two phones at the same time. See whether both calls are answered.
  3. Call about a car that won't start on the highway. Check that your urgent rule and towing details are followed.
  4. Ask a question from your price list, like the cost of an oil change.
  5. At the end of the week, compare the bill with the number of minutes and calls you actually used.

Questions shop owners ask

Can an answering service book appointments into Tekmetric?

None of the live answering services we checked named Tekmetric, Shopmonkey or Mitchell 1 on their pricing or integration pages. They mostly book into online calendars or take a message. Ask any service directly before you sign up. On Your Clock books straight into Tekmetric and other shop software.

Can I use it only as an after hours answering service?

Yes. You choose when On Your Clock answers: after hours only, peak hours, the lunch rush, weekends or 24/7. You can change the schedule any time from your dashboard, and every plan costs the same whatever hours you pick. During the hours you cover yourself, your phone rings as normal.

How does it handle breakdowns and emergency calls?

The agent takes the vehicle and location and follows the rule you set for urgent calls: flag it, alert your on call person, or book the first slot. If the driver needs a tow, it gives them your towing partner's details or tells your team. If a caller describes an emergency, like a fire or an accident, the agent tells them to call 911 first.

Can an AI receptionist answer more than one call at a time?

On Your Clock can answer up to 20 calls at the same time. Your shop's phone line needs to be able to forward more than one call at once.

Will my customers know they're talking to an AI?

That's your choice. The agent always answers in your shop's name, and you decide in your settings whether it says it's an AI assistant.

What happens when a caller wants a person?

The agent takes their details and marks the request for a callback in the call summary and in your shop software, so your team knows exactly who to call back and why.

How long does setup take?

We switch On Your Clock on for your shop's phone line for the free trial, and no shop software setup is needed for it. If you choose a plan, we connect your shop software in 1 to 3 days and do all of it.

What if my shop doesn't use shop management software?

On Your Clock books into our built in calendar or Google Calendar instead.

Does it work for shops with more than one location?

Yes. Each location gets its own plan on its own phone line, so you choose the minutes each shop needs.

Does this work for shops in Canada?
